Pink Ribbon Day Monday 26 October 2009

Pink Ribbon Day is part of Australia’s Breast Cancer Day and is an annual awareness day promoted by Cancer Council Tasmania to increase awareness of breast cancer and raise funds to combat the disease and support women and their families.

All funds raised through the sale of Pink Ribbon Day merchandise are directed towards breast cancer research and essential support services for women with breast cancer and their families.

Pink Ribbon Day logo
In Tasmania around 320 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and around 70 women die from the disease. One in eight women in Australia will develop breast cancer by the age of 75.

The good news is that the five-year relative survival proportion for women with breast cancer is the highest of all women’s cancer at 85% - an increase from 72% in the previous 10 years. This is because ofadvances in early detection and treatment.

Buying and wearing a pink ribbon is a way for Tasmanians to show their support for people affected by breast cancer and help raise money for vital research, education and support services.
