Cancer Council Tasmania is committed to working with health professionals to ensure cancer patients and their families get the support and information they need to help them cope with the impact of cancer.

Education sessions for health professionals in all areas of cancer care are being developed for 2008. Some sessions are aimed at general practice, while others will focus on specialists and allied health professionals.

  • Second annual Chronic Disease Management conference held 6 to 8 April 2009 in Sydney.
  • The inaugural Australian Practice Nurses Association (APNA) national conference held 30 April to 2 May 2009 in Melbourne.
  • CanNET Tasmania is holding a Communication Skills Workshop presented by Professor Stewart Dunn. Professor Dunn will present two multidisciplinary cancer care communication skills workshops in Tasmania . His internationally recognised seminars are thought provoking, humorous, but sensitive presentations on cancer care.  Workshops will be held in Hobart and Launceston, details can be found in the attached flyer.   • 15th UICC Reach to Recovery International Breast Cancer Support Conference held 13 to 15 May 2009.
  • 5th International DNA Sampling Conference held September 16 - 18, 2009, Banff, Canada. The Age of Personalized Genomics conference will present an international forum for in-depth discussion and debate on the ethical, legal and social controversies that characterize the rapidly developing field of personalized genomics.   • GPs Boost Cancer Screening Skills.
    The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has launched a new online learning activity designed to support general practitioners in boosting their knowledge about the latest approaches to the early detection of common types of cancer including breast cancer, cervical cancer, melanoma, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer and bowel cancer.   • Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement 2009 Education Program and Services has been launched with an extensive range of training opportunities throughout the year.
  • Third International Cancer Control Congress.
    The congress will be held in Italy in November to "bring together the world's best minds in cancer control to share knowledge and learn together what works and what does not in different resource settings to enable implementation of effective and sustainable population-based national cancer control strategies". Fellowship scheme,
the UICC Trish Greene International Cancer Nursing Training Workshop.

A 3 to 5 day teaching and training workshop by an international faculty of up to 3 experts for groups of up to 30 appropriately qualified nurses. Provides an opportunity for qualified nurses to augment their professional knowledge and to experience cancer nursing skills as practiced in the receiving host organisation.

This Fellowship is generously supported by an educational grant from the Oncology Nursing Society and the Oncology Nursing Society Foundation. More

The Conference

The 15th UICC Reach to Recovery International Breast Cancer Support Conference will be the first ever world wide forum across Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa, North, Central, and South America for breast cancer consumers, support organisations and health professionals to meet and address common goals. Delegates will share experiences and knowledge across different cultural settings, and in low and high resource countries and communities.

The 2009 Conference will focus on Survivorship, Capacity Building and Peer Support , and will feature outstanding speakers from around the world, specific tracks on young women's issues, resources and fundraising, consumer/clinician collaboration and capacity building, and an exciting, experiential adventure workshop.
