Sun exposure in childhood and adolescence greatly increases the chances of developing skin cancer later in life. The SunSmart Centres Program aims to minimise exposure to UV radiation from the sun during early childhood development.
Maintaining adequate vitamin D is also extremely important for good health. Cancer Council Tasmania takes a year round approach to safe sun exposure.

Early Childhood Centres The most important years for sun protection are during childhood and adolescence. Exposure to UV radiation during these years greatly increases the chance of developing skin cancer later in life. Early Childhood Centres have a duty of care to minimise children’s exposure to the sun and provide an environment that positively influences sun protection behaviour.
The current National Childcare Accreditation Council (NCAC) accreditation systems for Long Day Care, Family Day Care and Out of School Hours Care require services to develop and implement a sun protection policy. Workplaces Spending long periods of time working outdoors year after year can out you at a high risk of skin cancer. Health and safety legislation in each Australian state means your employer has a legal responsibility to provide a safe working environment. This legislation also states that, as an employee, you must cooperate with your workplace’s sun protection program. If self employed, it’s in the best interest to look after yourself and use sun protection at work.
Cancer Council Tasmania can come to your workplace to assist with the education of workers and to develop a sun protection policy. Please contact Cancer Council SunSmart officer on 6233 2030 or email: sunsmart@cancertas.org.au.
