A diagnosis of childhood cancer is often devastating for a family.
Childhood cancer is treated aggressively, often with a combination of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, at a time of life when bodies are growing and developing.
Often parents of children with cancer are young themselves and may have other children, which can mean that one parent has to leave a job to care for the child being treated and to maintain family stability.
The needs are great, and Cancer PLUS (Parents like us) helps provide essential programs and services for Tasmanian families of children with cancer during treatment and recovery.
Cancer PLUS was set up by The Cancer Council Tasmania to educate, support, serve and advocate for families of children with cancer, survivors of childhood cancer, and the professionals who care for them.
Cancer PLUS provides financial and emotional support and is helping develop Tasmanian paediatric cancer services through its affiliation with the International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organisations.
For more information call the Cancer PLUS Coordinator (03) 6233 2030, call the Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20 or contact the paediatric cancer coordinator at a local hospital.

Financial support
Diagnosis of a childhood cancer usually means significant and unexpected economic upheaval for the child’s family. When a child needs treatment on the mainland this can put extreme pressures on family finances and relationships.
Cancer PLUS provides a package of assistance to meet travel and accommodation costs for initial treatment.
All assistance is given in accordance with guidelines established by the Cancer PLUS Advisory Committee (made up of representatives of treating and referring institutions, clinicians, parents and Canteen).
All requests are determined by the relevant Tasmanian hospital paediatric oncology coordinator, taking into account the following:
Sunsmart reading for today funding assistance available from government and other sources
Sunsmart reading for today the length of time the child is to undergo treatment
Sunsmart reading for today the location of the treatment centre.
Support may include cash payments to assist living expenses, but will not include the purchase of capital items, other than those specifically required to ensure comprehensive care for the child.

Kids can’t fight cancer alone!
Childhood cancer is the number one disease killer of children in Australia and treatment can take between two and three years. These kids and their families then need a hand to move on. Your tax deductable gift to Cancer PLUS will provide immediate support to Tasmanian children diagnosed with cancer, their parents and families. It also helps kids and their families to build a better future.
