Research
Much of the funds that the Cancer Council Tasmania raises go to cancer research. Each February
we allocate funds received from public donations to
a wide range of cutting edge cancer research in Tasmania.
Over the past 12 years, we have allocated over $3 million to cancer research in this state thanks to the generous support of the Tasmanian community. All our research is assessed by experts
in the field to ensure that projects with the best chance of success
are supported.
Peer-assessed research has led to major advances
in our knowledge about cancer and this knowledge has led to improved
treatments for cancer. Research also identifies treatments with fewer side effects and leads to more sophisticated early detection methods, which often means better patient outcomes.

We are the largest independent funder of peer-assessed cancer research in Tasmania. This funding comes from generous public support through Australia's Biggest
Morning Tea and Daffodil Day, memorial donations in lieu of flowers
and bequests.
In February 2008, we distributed over $344,000 to
Tasmanian research projects
.
